AmeriCorps Kickoff: Pittsburgh

by Annie Merrill

Last Friday, KEYS members had a great opportunity to participate in a citywide AmeriCorps kickoff event in downtown Pittsburgh. Starting off the day at the downtown Macy’s, KEYS members joined other AmeriCorps members from around the city to enjoy a good breakfast, some awesome guest speakers, and fun team building activities. First year KEYS member Maggie Tully really enjoyed the morning activities, “It was fun to be able to meet AmeriCorps members from other programs in Pittsburgh and find out what they do. I met a ton of new people who were very passionate about the service they’re doing this year.”

After breakfast all AmeriCorps members broke into smaller groups to complete a service project helping clean up the cultural district downtown in preparation for a gallery crawl that took place Friday evening. Picking up garbage and cleaning off garbage cans were among their main duties.

To finish up the day, all AmeriCorps members were able to participate in a rally where Mayor Ravenstahl gave a speech, and recited the AmeriCorps pledge with everyone. It was a great way to end the kickoff leaving everyone feeling inspired and motivated for their upcoming year of service.
