Maurice Sendak (1928-2012)

Reading is magic, it is how we relax, get inspired, learn and grow. It is one of the most important things we learn as children and most of us are deeply impacted by the first books we read or have read to us.

When asked to name their favorite books from childhood most people include “Where the Wild Things Are.” All of my friends who have kids have a copy. I can remember my mother reading it to us and smiling . We also had a copy of “The Miami Giant” which was illustrated by Sendak. He wrote and/or illustrated many, many books over his long career. According to a biography an illness which confined him to bed began a love of reading and he he was inspired to start drawing by the movie “Fantasia.” In turn his work has inspired so many children of all ages to read.

So today let’s all have a “wild rumpus” in memory of one of our best ambassadors into the world of reading and the wonders of imagination.
